GET TO KNOW…ALEXANDRA M. PHILIPPOT

BACKGROUND

Alexandra grew up on a small acreage near Stonewall, Manitoba. Throughout her undergraduate degree, she worked as a legal assistant in her hometown and then joined SNJ in 2020 as a summer student.

EDUCATION

Alexandra obtained a Bachelor of Arts (Advanced) degree with a major in Psychology and a minor in French from the University of Manitoba, graduating with Distinction in 2018. She was frequently on the Dean’s List and received the University of Manitoba General Scholarship – Arts for being in the top 10% of students at the Faculty of Arts.

She continued her studies at Robson Hall, Faculty of Law, completing the requirements for her Juris Doctor in 2021. In the summer of 2019, she attended The Hebrew University of Jerusalem and received a Travel Award for her academic performance. She was also the recipient of the Indigenous Student Award of Excellence for Outstanding Achievement and the Muriel St. John Research Award for Women’s Legal Issues for her academic paper on the effects of intimate partner violence on mothers and children.  She also received the Gerald W. Schwartz Gold Medal in Business Law for the graduating student in the Faculty of Law with the highest standing in the area of Business Law and the Schwartz/Reisman Scholars Program Award for students with a minimum degree grade point average of 3.75 who have demonstrated community involvement and leadership.

Throughout her time at law school, she was actively involved in the Manitoba Law Students’ Association, being a member of both the Accessibility and Academic Committees. She was also the President of the Robson Hall Mental Health Group, Vice-President Social Coordinator of the Manitoba Indigenous Law Students’ Association and the French Representative for the National Indigenous Law Students’ Association.  Additionally, she was been a mentor with the Neechiwaken Indigenous Peer Mentor Program for 4 years. During her third year of law school, she was involved with the L. Kerry Vickar Business Law Clinic.

Alexandra received her Call to the Manitoba Bar in 2022.

PERSONAL INTERESTS

Alexandra is a member of the Community Relations Committee with the Steinbach Chamber of Commerce. She enjoys spending time with her family and friends, traveling to new places, camping, hiking and yoga.
