Biography

Gemma Brown is a dedicated partner at Smith Neufeld Jodoin, having joined the firm’s partnership in 2018. With a career that spans over two decades, Gemma has cultivated an extensive and diverse legal background, beginning her journey with the firm in 1997 as a legal assistant. After nearly a decade in this role, she pursued her legal studies, transitioning to law school in 2005. During her studies, Gemma returned to Smith Neufeld Jodoin as a summer student in both 2006 and 2007, before articling with the firm in 2008-2009. She was called to the Manitoba Bar in May 2009 and has since been an integral part of the firm, first as an associate and now as a partner.

Gemma earned her Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) from the University of Manitoba in 2008, where she demonstrated exceptional academic achievement, earning class prizes for the highest standing in Civil Procedure, Trademarks & Patents, and Municipal Law. This strong academic foundation underpins her practice, enabling her to deliver thoughtful, well-rounded, and effective legal solutions to her clients.

Driven by a commitment to lifelong learning and professional growth, Gemma has furthered her expertise by enrolling in the CPA Canada In-Depth Tax Program, successfully completing its first year. This specialized training enhances her ability to address complex taxation issues, supporting her ongoing efforts to provide comprehensive legal counsel, particularly in the context of owner-manager taxation and business transitions in Southeastern Manitoba.

Gemma’s practice focuses on corporate and commercial law, with particular expertise in mergers and acquisitions, corporate restructuring and owner-manager taxation. She also offers in-depth counsel in estate planning, trusts, wills and real estate law.

Known for delivering creative, practical, and client-focused legal solutions, Gemma works closely with businesses, families, and individuals to address a wide range of legal challenges. Her work includes advising on family business and farm transitions, guiding owner-managed businesses in start-up to succession planning, assisting entrepreneurs, and supporting first-time homebuyers. Gemma is dedicated to simplifying complex legal concepts, ensuring her clients are confident and well-informed at every stage of the legal process.

Gemma is an active member of several professional organizations, including the Manitoba Bar Association (MBA) and the Canadian Bar Association (CBA). In addition, Gemma is deeply involved in her community, serving as legal counsel to the Steinbach Pistons Junior A Hockey Team and as a director and legal counsel for the brand new state of the art Southeast Events Center.

Gemma is committed to professional development, having participated in the Cambridge Forums Estates & Trust Practitioners Forum, where she contributed to the creation of the 3rd Generation Forum as part of the 2020-2021 Steering Committee and with STEP Winnipeg.

Her leadership extends beyond the legal community, having served on the Board of Directors for the Steinbach Chamber of Commerce, where she chaired the Business Development Committee for six years and co-chaired the Revenue Generation Committee for the 2016 Manitoba Summer Games in Steinbach.

Outside of her legal practice, Gemma is dedicated to her family and community. She lives in Steinbach with her husband and has two grown children that she proudly supports in their business and career endeavours. A self-described foodie, Gemma enjoys experimenting with new dishes, often incorporating home-grown ingredients. In her spare time, she enjoys gardening, spending quality time with family and friends at the lake and partaking in sporting events.
